Sometimes I just want me some progressive house. Some big progressive house. I'm talking the cosmic, synth-y, trippy stuff that sounds like you're at the world's biggest planetarium laser show. Prog house and funk are what brought me to this music, and my passion for it is as strong as ever.

There was a sound that was popular in progressive house in the rave scene of the late 90s, epitomized by John Digweed, who (along with Fatboy Slim) was my gateway drug to all these big ol' chuggin' toonz. Every once in a while I like to try to revisit that sound. There was something uplifting about it.

"Beatitude" is a big ol' slab of late 90s prog house, with an uplifting opening, a hypnotic core that builds to a tear-the-roof-off peak (courtesy of peakmaster Thomas Penton's remix of "Dragonfly"), and a huuuuuge feel-good finish.

Simple Ain't Always Easy

Since 2006 I've brought out something like 270 Podrunner mixes and 170 Groovelectric mixes. Believe it or not, after 440 or so mixes (good lord), what can trip me up more than any other thing is coming up with a title.

Podrunner's tough because they're workout mixes, and I long ago used up my synonyms for run, fast, speed, etc. Groovelectric is easier because I can just try to capture the feel of the mix without relating it to exercise.

But when you've got a cosmic, 90s-style prog groover like this week's "Beatitude," how do you come up with a title that you haven't used before, or that isn't a huge cliche? (Believe me, when it comes to prog house and trance, all the Cosmic Words have been taken.) I try not to overthink it, because the harder you think about a title, the harder it becomes. I step back and try to condense the feel of the mix to a few words. The title's usually in those.

Sometimes it's silly ("Homicidal Unicorns," fergodsake). Sometimes it's evocative ("Breathing Underwater"). Or a pun ("Bottom Feeder"). I like "Beatitude" because the word itself is perfect ("a state of utmost bliss"), and because of the play on words ("beat attitude" / "be attitude").

Sometimes a mix is late because I can't think of a damned title! There's the mix, and it's all ready to go, but without a name I can't write the newsletter or make links or record the introduction. It drives me nuts.

I think it helps that I also write fiction for a living, and that I spent years in advertising as a copywriter. (Thank god something good came out of that gig.) Anyway, I thought I'd write about it here because sometimes it's surprising what can be an obstacle to overcome.
